I picked up a Sekonic L-308X Light Meter a few weeks ago. The device is at the affordable end of the Sekonic line of light meters but works great. It has limited features when compared to the high end Sekonic light meters, but does offer both Ambient and Reflective light metering and is everything I need in and out of the studio. Small, light weight, and once you figure it out, easy to use.

Not knowing the difference, the previous year I bought a minty 20-yr-old L-308. It functions only with shutter priority, doesn’t retain measured data when powered off, and doesn’t display ISO unless one presses the “ISO” button.
The “X” model remedies all that, meters 1EV dimmer light, can be operated shutter or aperture-priority, has an automatically backlit screen, and can be set to meter in 1/2 or 1/3 stops. Plus it can be custom-calibrated if you prefer.
Mostly, I’m working on a tripod in Aperture Priority. This alone lead me to buy the current model. Shutter priority doesn’t cut it when I’m doing weirdscapes with long focal-length medium-format lenses.
When I make a reading in aperture-priority mode, another, smaller digit appears right next to the f/#… it’s the tenth of an f/stop — to nail the exposure to that level of precision.
High points cont’d: Fast, free shipping to Victoria, BC, a 2-yr. Strobe Pro warranty and (at time of purchase) the lowest price anywhere in Canada (from my research). I meter incident light. It’s great to have 100% confidence in my meter. One of the best features of this little varmit: a low cognitive load when out shooting. This frees up brain-power to find and frame interesting compositions. Altogether this bad boy is a “W” for me.
Low point: not inexpensive. (High point: Not cheap either!)
